The Apprentice – Episode 12: Affordable Luxury

First of all lets all take a moment to celebrate the fact the Stephen got fired last week!! FINALLY! And a ‘double firing’ meant that we said farewell to smiley Gabby and are left with The Final Five (insert dramatic music here) Nick, Tom, Jade, Adam and Ricky. Our personal fave is Nick (mainly due to his fabulous hair) so fingers crossed he stays in but I have to say I’m loving Tom quite a lot too!

So the final task before the interviews start next week and the candidates are sent to the ‘high end’ Burlington Arcade and briefed for the week – they must create an ‘affordable luxury’ brand, package it, market it, create a shop and pitch it to Lord Sugar and some ‘industry experts’. Lord Sugar made Adam leader of Phoenix with Jade and Nick and Ricky led Tom in Stirling. I swear half the perks of being on The Apprentice seem to be sitting ‘tasting’ or ‘trialing’ products, we all remember Ricky munching his way through 3 plates or scallops last week! Phoenix started off with luxury hot chocolate and fast became a confectionary brand with ‘Drunken Jellies’, marshmallows and chocolate (hot or otherwise) and the two fitties on Stirling went for male grooming with a focus on shaving.

They all had a great time making labels and decorating their shops and between planning my own imaginary little shop and watching them I found myself egging on Stirling! They ended up with a not-so-great looking shop and packaging range but their pitch was flawless and their marketing strategy seemed watertight. On the other team Adam was out of his comfort zone yet again and they ended up with a mish-mash of average ideas and very little (dare I say it) strategy. Jade was hard at work making everything from cocktails to jellies while Nick was swanning around talking numbers but poor Adam was a bit of a lost lamb and his pitch was cringe-worthy (if a little endearing) when he couldn’t read the notes he’d written on his sweaty palms.

In the end I wasn’t surprised when Lord Sugar pronounced Stirling the victors and quickly transferred from being happy to crossing my fingers for Nick! After a surprisingly passionate speech from Jade, Lord Sugar’s choice seemed clear and sure enough Adam was fired. It was a shame to see him go but he had the happiest fired face I’ve ever seen and we’re left hoping that he’ll soon be back in his beloved comfort zone! So for the dreaded interviews next week we’re left with Nick and his fabulous hair, Jade and her horrendous voice, Ricky and his ridiculous name and Tom – my new favourite to win! So get you’re pillows ready to hide behind because next weeks gonna be tough, Margaret’s back along with ‘scary-bald-interview-man’ and Lord Sugar will make his final decision. I have to say it’s Tom all the way for me now, but what do you think??
